Tempo / Tempa
Murda inna dancehall! This was the riddim (with small variations) behind Anthony Redrose's Tempo (King Tubby), Nitty Gritty's Hog Inna Minty (King Jammy) and Tenor Saw's Fever (Sugar Minott). Classic cuts to say the least. Redrose's version was the biggest hit, but I think I've read somewhere that Jammy's cut was the first. Anyway, you who went to dances in the days of early digi will surely remember the response these tunes got from the crowd. I'm hope these digi tunes will soon be rereleased, it's about time. Don't miss them. Nitty Gritty, Tenor Saw, Anthony Redrose, Carl Meeks, King Kong and Courtney Melody was the hottest digi singers. (Courtney Melody is my favourit "make the lyrics while you go along" singer. (Yes, there are a few to choose from in the reggae business). Check his Bad Bwoy LP for Jammy's. He obviously has no idea of what the song is going to be about when the first chords hit. That combined with what a critic at the time called "technical weakness" (i.e. he don't sing in tune) you would think it would be a catastrophy. But instead... murdera! His style is pure energy! Raw danchall exitement! (To be fair he also made some exellent tunes where words, singing and his energic style came together in the wickedest way. Check his Tappa and Ujama singles. Unfourtunetly these are very hard to come across. Compile and rerelease Greensleeves, RAS, Blood And Fire...:-).
