Also known as: The Warning
This is the Final Warning riddim, produced by Shane Brown. A bit confusing this because this riddim was also called The Warning. This cut I Busy, but it’s more known for Movados Money Changer Final Warning. There was also a recut of the old Hot Milk/Murderer riddim during 2008 called Warning. Then there are older riddims called Warning, for example the one Half Pint cut his lastest (last?) hit on – Glory Within.
Apart from Unfinished Business, the most well receive recut was not an old one drop classic from the 60:ties or 70-ties, but a recut of the Martial Arts artis riddim from 2001.
Cordell 'Scatta' Burrell remade his Martial Arts himself as Self Defence. Or perhaps re-voiced, because the difference between the old and the new version is neglectable.
In general there has been a lot of recuts of late 90-ties early 2000 riddims during the last two years. I guess the reason for this is that many of the new producers are young and grew up with these riddims. Even Stephen McGregor has recut 90-ties riddims, the Bee Hives riddim is loosely based on Stink. Corduroy has been recut as Tear-up Jeans. I’m not too enthusiastic about these late 90-ties riddims, and I feel the current hype is exaggerated, but then again - I wasn’t 18 at the time so…
The problem is also that if you chose to recut a top riddim, it’s really difficult to better it. It was a top riddim for good reasons, usually not only because of the strength of the riddim but also for the voicings on it. And even if you are able to better the riddim, how can you possibly hope to get equal or better cuts on it?
I think it is a better choice to recut a riddim that was good but not so well know. Prime example was what the Germans did with Isaacs/Junjos Night Nurse (called Doctors Darling in the new version – Tanyas What A Pity, and other) or some other producer did with Isaacs If You See My Mary riddim recently (I can’t remember what the recut was called but I’m sure you can google it if your interested. Wicked roots riddim!)
Anyway, the recut that have been most successful this year was Unfinished Business, a recut by producer Linton ‘TJ’ White of Dave Kellys classic (well….) Showtime riddim.
It is rumored the Dave Kelly is planning legal actions to get the royalties from the tune. It seems TJ didn’t clear this. Most would agree that’s reasonable, but question is if Dave Kelly ever has paid any royalties for all the classic JA riddims he has recut during his career, like Movie Star, General, Hot Milk, Run Down The World… Although it may be that he’s actually never been responsible for all those releases, perhaps what has been released in his own labels has been pure originals. When working for Germain he has certainly recut loads of classics though… Should be possible to check for someone with a little more energy then me…
As someone noted: “it's ironic that the riddim is called "unfinished business"” :)
