Dark Again

KABOOOOOMMMM……

This years round up was later than ever, sorry about that, but I have so much else...

But first a little bragging…:): These days there are many riddims sites out there, but there can be only one original. Jamrid is da original. No gyow. Yuh dun know. The second one was Vlados classic reggae-riddims.com, but even the second incarnation of that is now history. And the others come and go, but the veteran will always be there. Trust me pon dat. Because I love reggae music.

So let’s get right to the essentials, the result of the Jamrid Riddim Of The Year 2007 voting. 256 voters casted 780 riddim votes. As there were no nominees and everyone could vote for any riddim they liked the where huge amounts of riddims that got 1 - 3 votes. But these were the top ones:

Riddim – votes:
Dark Again - 55
Tremor - 37
Blue Tooth - 30
Air Waves - 22
Gang War - 22
Guardian Angel - 21
Artillery - 17
Drop Draws -16
Powercut - 14
Madness -11
Chiney K - 10
Hot Fuck/Hot Wuk - 9
Silver Screen - 9
Darker Shadow - 9
Rae - 9
Shadow -9
Bee Hive - 8
Raging Bull -7
Earthquake -7
After Dark - 7
Jam Down -7
Battlefield - 7
Gully Creature – 7

An immediate observation is that there are so few one drop riddims. Seems the one drop craze Vendetta/Corleon kick started with his huge Drop Leaf riddim a few years ago is over. However, what the chart doesn’t show is that there are still as many one drops created, but the real hits are missing. This may be explained by that the main JA producers has not focused on one drops, the one of the most consistent one drop producers, Gibbo, did not release anything this year or that it’s just a coincident. Or a combination of all of this.

As usual voters could also vote for best dancehall and best culture tune, but much less voted on particular tunes. These were the top 5 in each category:

Top Dancehall Tunes:
1. Munga – Bad From Mi Born
2. Mavado – Dying
3. Mavado - Gully Side
4. Mavado - Squeeze Breast
5. Driver A-Buju Banton

Top Culture Tunes:
1. Pressure- Love And Affection
2. Tarrus Riley - Shes Royal
3. Pressure - Ghetto Life
4. Jah Cure - Sticky
5. Albarosie - Kingston Town

You may also have noticed that there where no real big crossover hit coming from the dancehall or reggae industry this year. Last year has Dutty Wine, which was huge. The one that got closest was Sean Kingston, but I don’t know really if that is to be regarded as a product of the industry, but rather a US produced reggae flavored pop song. I think was Mr Vegas Hot Wuk was genuine dancehall tune that got closest to crossover success, but that was not even one of Vegas biggest crossover hits. I would think Heads High, Hot Gyal Today, Tamale and Pull Up was as big or bigger.

The full voting can be found here:

The “Bounty Killer Substitution Award” goes this year to Future Fambo. Congratulations!

Other JAMRID awards: Producer of the year - De Genious, DJ - Movado, singer - Chezidek, getting back to all of that.
