Yes, star... Anedda year pass - 2K6...

Me a go say supm bout Mavado, Busy, Kartel an riddims like Sidewalk, Powacut an de dancing an de warring exetera, but me nah get inna dat rah rah right now, ca fuss thing fuss...:

Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the 2006 roundup.

The riddim thing has changed a lot over the last 12 years.

Jamaican Riddim Directory was launched in the current form in June 1995, which makes 2007 year 12 of this site. In these 12 years there have been millions of visitors to JAMRID. You who have been around for a long time may remember that in those days riddim wasn't even spelt "riddim", but "rhythm". Even in reggae press it was "rhythm" not "riddim". JAMRID was the first to consequently use "riddim" and it soon spread. I'm very proud of this... :)

(... although I have to admit partly it had to do with that I had great difficulties to spell "rhythm")

When I started JAMRID 12 years ago hardly anyone but musicians and the real dancehall devotees understood the concept of “riddims”. The rest, 90%, of all reggae listeners didn't know about "riddim", they just had a vague feeling there where some recycling of backing tracks going no. I was one of them. I decided to do this site to learn more, highlight the phenomena and give some guidance to other fans of reggae and dancehall on how this thing worked. The idea was to offer a "dictionary" of riddims where you could go to identify a riddim or find new favourites.

Today things are very different, the concept of "riddim" has been popularized to the extent that this is now central to modern JA music. 12 years ago it was just becoming accepted to cut more then one artist on a new instrumental. It was OK to do it on a old classic, like Cherry Oh Baby, or an instrumental that already been a big hit and where the audience was demanding more cuts, like Sleng Teng of -85. But to build a brand new instrumental and then voice 10 artist before any version had been released was considered cheap, bad business practice, well... almost immoral.

These days, on the other hand, it's almost impossible to have any kind of impact which an original riddim that has only one vocal version. Off the top of my head the only ones in recent years I can remember is VC:s By His Deeds, Busy Signal Step Out and Ganja Farmer from Marlon Asha (although that was versioned by others afterwards).

In -95 there wasn't many reggae sites in the Internet and most of those that existed are long gone now. The only two I can remember from those days that are still around are niceup.com and the discussion forum rec.music.reggae. I noticed dancehallreggae.com also is on it's 12:th year but I cant remember it from those days. Perhaps also reggae-vibes.com. Anyway, JAMRID is surely one of the oldest reggae sites on the Internet, and before leaving the subject I'd like to thank all those people who have encouraged me through the years. Hopefully I'll be able to keep delivering what I've done right from start with JAMRID: riddims for interactive use, a personal voice and high level analyses of this music based on its riddims.

Suh... let's look at what went down in 2006.

This riddim, Smash, was voted number one in the JAMRID voting and this voicing, Matterhorns Dutty Wine, was voted tune of the year. More on Matterhorns careers as a DJ later in this yearly roundup as well as the complete voting.

Production by Craig 'Daseca' Marsh, also known for riddims like Safe Sex, Man Fe Dead and most of all Anger Management.

.....

Ok, for those who are new to JAMRID - go back to the main Riddims page, click the next riddim under "Riddims of 2006" to continue reading this yearly round up.

all i would like to say, is that 2006 was disappointing riddimwise... and all the beef hype quickly got tiring. i re ently played black chiney's 2000 mix and it reminded me of what it was like back then, when dancehal was so exciting. a few good things came out of this year, top of them all being Buju's return in the dancehall arena. and also collie budz' come around. A big tune! i recently heard a re-cut of the black cinderella riddim done in the same way as "come around", which was also reat. i hope thats the way things are going.
