85 has been one of the most popular riddims 05/06. There is a lot of thing to say about producer Dave Kelly because he is unique in the business in many ways.

These day I guess he has to be counted as a veteran in the business, although I remember when he was considered a newcomer, working as a engineer for Donovan Germaine’s Penthouse Records. What is interesting is that he has a lately have had a different approach to how to handle his riddims and artist associated with him. Examples are this riddim, the 85 riddim, where Cham was the only artist on the riddim for a long time. Eventually there where other cuts, but there weren't that many and they surfaced a long time after Cham's Ghetto Story on the riddim was a hit. As far as I can see these where the only versions:

Assassin - Anywhere We Go
Baby Cham - Ghetto Story
Blacker Ranks - Later Fi She
Million Styles - Miss Fatty
Pinchers - Desperate Scenario
Spice - Fight Over Man
YT - England Story

Here is the 85 riddim as a 2006 riddim, because generally this was the year the riddim got real big, but it was released in 2005. Significantly, the riddim got as many votes in the riddim if the year voting as last year (whereas generally it's a clear trend that riddims released early in the year are not as well represented in the voting at the end of the year, Bill Back being one example.)

Apart from this, Dave Kelley is probably the producer that has made most classic riddims after Jammys and Coxone Dodd – Showtime, Joy Ride, Arab Attack, Bruck Out, Backyard, The Bug, Bounce....

Personally I'm not too impressed by this riddim. If it weren't for Ghetto Story, which probably was tune of the year together with that Collie Budz tune and Dutty Wine, I think it would have passed unnoticed. After all, not even Dave Kelly can be successful with no name artists such as a Blacker Ranks, Spice and YT.

Which brings me to the other aspect of the Dave Kelly of today. Unlike other producers he tries to keep a stable of artists that he is working with on a longer perspective. Cham is the main example of this, only voicing very rarely for other producers, and as it seems, after clearing it with Kelly. In the case of Cham this has worked out great for both parties. At least Cham would have been forgotten by now if it wasn't for Kellys support. Kelly are very consciously building artists, not only does he do the riddims, he also writes the lyrics, comes up with the hooks and so no. (If you are new to reggae that doesn't sound very original, but in dancehall business it is. Generally a producer does a riddim, hands over copies to a number of artists and they that get back with a finished voicing of the tune. The produced has no hand whatsoever in constructing the songs.) Just about everything released by Cham is done together with Kelly. Ghetto Story is one example. It's even interesting to note that some of the things in the song (stealing the ballot box for example) really couldn't be something that Cham did, he was far to young at these elections. But perhaps Kelly wasn't. Anyway, I doubt Cham would come up with the lyrics of Ghetto Story alone.

Another example of Kellys song writing abilities is Bonty Killers "Look" one of BK:s best tunes ever.
