Big stinkin helicopter flow through di air
what dem call it dem call it weedeater
dem never did there when me wa totin water
or when me did applying fertilizer
yet outta di sky dem spittin fire
and im a little youth man with a hot temper
me dig up me stinkin rocket launcher
and in a di air dispense the helicopter
me ya chant
Yes im a ganja planter
call me di ganja farmer
What hobby ganja farmer, or his friends enjoying the crop, (and this covers about 99% of all people reading this I, don’t you think?) could resist these lyrics?
Huge hit all over the reggae world, but perhaps bigger in Asia and Europe then JA and US.
Marlon Asha is a Trini, with a history as calypso artist, and the tune is also produced locally, producer a man call Carl "Beaver" Henderson.
It’s interesting how non JA artist is taking over the scene. Talked about the sound system scenen earlier, and to an extent it’s the same thing with with live performances.
Attended a few reggae festivals this summer and I must say it’s a pity JA artists doesn’t understand they must work much much harder on their live perfromances. The painful truth is that the best reggae performance is no longer done by JA artists.
When it comes to traditional reggae, Gentlemen is miles ahead of his JA competitors, while on the “dancehall” side nothing I’ve seen since Bountys early years (when he was touring with a band) comes close to Seneagals Daara J. JA artists isn’t working hard enough. They don’t understand that it takes much more, and partly different tings, in terms of entertainment to compete on an international stage then on a local Kingston dance.
Now you may say it’s not fair and I forget Beres and Ele, and perhaps you are right… they are good, but still the bottom line is that they aren’t exactly representative for JA artists. They are great, but they are the exceptions to a rule. In the seventies and eighties JA artist were the best live performers of popular music in the world. This is no longer the case.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, what I used to call the “most inventive music on earth” didn’t exactly have a year characterized by new fresh ideas. Listen to Baile Funk for example (Brazilian ghetto music with much in common with dancehall) and you’ll se a whole other attitude. Things are new, new, new…
But I’m optimistic about dancehall still, because the pace is there, there are more riddims released then ever, and alltough a lot of them sound alike, quantity has always been the garantee for quality in JA music. Wait a couple of years and you’ll only remember the good tunes. And 2005 has certainly had it average 10 boom tunes that go into the evergreens of dancehall music.
Like Ganja Farmer. But then again, that was a Trini chune…
Marlon Asha - Girl I Love You
Lisa Danjah - Answer The Call
Marlon Asha - Ganja Planter
Jungle - Put Down The Gun
Khari Obafemi - Marijuana
Mad Scorpion - Love Meh Empress
Supa Chile - Mona Lisa

Comment by: fazia Date: 2007-03-22 Comment: Relax ms.ukku, don't take it so seriously...
Being a lover of JA music I'd like to se "my" artist work harder, be better... it hurts me to se Gentleman doing roots better then Luci, the Brzilizans being more inventive, Daara J outa Senegal doing danehall better then Buju...
Comment by: :-) Selecta Date: 2007-02-13 Comment: I dont understand the intent of this pointless, pitiful essay.
Are you trying to downgrade reggae artist's in order to shed some light on this artist who has one hit. I am utterly confused and find it hilarious that this person tried to critize the reggae community.
Marlon Asha, has an hit song, no one is arguing that and yes he is trini( it is clear from his accent). So what are you trying to prove??
What does Jamaican Artist's performance have to do with anything.
Its unfair to say JA artists are not working hard enough.
One hit by Marlon Asha , does not make trini artist..no better or hard working that the many Jamaican artist who continue to distribute many hits internationally.
SO what if it was a trini tune??
How pointless and stupid. Always looking for some way to downgrade Jamaicans.
Accept the fact you will never be as good in the entertainment industry as jamaicans.
