Mo’ Music producer Louis “Flabba’ Malcolm has produced riddims like you ‘Unstoppable” and “Headache”. I hesitated to put this riddim in because… is it really that good?
But ok, to find a reason to play Tanya Stephens and get a chance to say:
Tanya is by far the most talented artist of the girls, and counting the men I only rate Ele higher in terms of having the potential of pop market success. She sings and DJ:s world class, she has got the best lyrics in dancehall business by far (really there is noooo competition!), she has got the looks, humor and she got a firm idea of where she is going and what she want to achieve. On the other hand, since people like Sean Paul can be successful perhaps there are other qualities that are more important then these. Like a light skin color. Orange hair might dweet to, ca you look kinda krazy you know, ho, ho…like these guys with faces darkened with burnt cork, white lips and wigs doing tap dancing.
Bottom line: perhaps big record companies aren’t that interested in people who know what they want.
Anyway, Tanya got it all, but still I’m a bit worried. Many of you people probably know Tanya did a singer/songwriter type album in Sweden a few years ago (Allowing Ele to coin yet another legendary punchline: “Tanya Thephens gone a Thweden”), and many probably remember her last VP record, Studded For Extra Pleasure. In both cases these weren’t exactly Tanya doing what she does best, and in both cases marketing this was mission impossible. VP attempt was one of the worst in the history of music, as the title and cover was something completely different then the content. Add to that the mix of material from badly chosen Motown classics to dancehall scorchers like 911 and Big Ninja Bike. The two artists in the business with most firm ideas of what they want to achieve, most talent and most to ideas of what route they want to take is also has the most badly managed carriers. Tanya and Bounty. Now VP has taken on Tanya for a second time to release her next CD, Gangsta Blues. The press release says “Gangsta Blues will reach people on a variety of levels, with issues that touch on the situations that affect all types of people.” Whaaaa…. !!! This will be a thriller! Something tells me the tune “It’s A Pity” will means something to me in the near future.
When all you would have to do to produce a truly classic dancehall album is to compile Tanyas 20 best 7” over the last few years. If you also want to make some money let Atlantic market it and you have a new star the size of Missy Elliott. Trust me pon dat.
While I’m on the subject: Oldshoole style tune of the year is Tanya Stephens It’s A Pity. And BTW if you think the riddim sounds familiar you are right, it’s Gregorys Night Nurse riddim.
