Cut a boring riddim and record 30 versions over it. Some got to be a hit if you let everyone loose on it, right Lenky? Wrong!
Although the riddims hasn’t had it’s time to work it’s way into peoples minds yet, I just cant see that this will make much of an impact. Sure it’s going to be played with all those name brand artists on it, but really… what’s exciting about it?
The riddims of 2003 made me miss Steely & Clevie and Sly Dunbar. Although those guys have been a bit inconsistent the last few years at least they come up with stuff that sounds completely fresh and original every no and then. These days the Jammys family/entourage are the ones that produce the most original music in JA (I never thought I would say something like that…). It’s probably not a good sign that the most inventive riddims of 2003 came from Miami; South Rakkas Clappas.
Nope, Lenky have to come up with something more original then this. If Lenky is supposed to be the hottest producer at the moment, then the music is not healthy. Although I don’t think he is, Diwali was a huge hit, but….
Not even Ele impress on this riddim with his tune Blessed.
Speaking of Ele, I don’t think I need to say who I rate artist of the year 2003. Ele rules the dance, with emphasis on DANCE. And his Good To Go CD is real solid, his best to date by far. One thing with that CD that was a nice surprise to me is that VP obviously has some kind of strategy in terms of how to handle the riddims on it. The riddims of huge chunes like Pon De River, Signal The Plane, Blasé Blasé are Elephant man exclusivs. These are riddims not voiced by other artists and not made available through one riddims. Don’t really know what this mean, but obviously someone at VP is doing some form of strategic planning here…. (Ele also are doing these lyrics on other riddims as specials so you may find him doing them on the same riddims as others (or are these splice kinda tings?).
