African Beat

Also known as: Under Me Sensi

Yet another Studio One original (maybe, se below). This one is widely credited Don Drummond , originally a jazz trombonist and undoubtly one of the most influential musicians in the development of reggae. Sadly he never got to see the growth and international success of Jamaican music in the seventies. He died in -69 after being committed to Bellevue.

It seems like this is not the end of the story. To my suprise i got thisfrom Pupa Vlado outa Berlin:

Just a word to the African Beat-Riddim:
This one is - very strange - originated by the German Bert Kaempfert back in 1962. I have the song on a German sampler (Deutsche Singlehits der 60er Jahre, Polydor 516 195-2), and it is called, well, ,Afrikaan Beat'. Sorry for Don Drummond ...Bert Kaempfert is well known for his US No. 1 Hit in 1960 called "Wonderland by Night", he also is the songwriter of "Spanish Eyes" and "Strangers in the Night". In 1962 he produced the Beatles with Tony Sherdian. (CD-ROM ,Frank Laufenbergs Rock- und Pop-Lexikon', Sony Music).
Pupa Vlado

I love this ! 'Afrikaan Beat'... Was Don Drummond a riddimsnatcher? What about all his other originals? Are they all Italian folksongs, jazz-standards and Harry Belafonte covers? ;-)

I bet your eager to hear old time rudie Bert Kaempfert kill sound.Yes, mi selecta...

Come up Mr Kaempfert and lick a soundbwoy dead !

The riddim had a revival summer 97 but this time known as Under Me Sensiand Jah Works. I guess about fifty versions of this riddim was released.Standouts from these new versions where Tony Curtis I Believe I Can Fly, Buju's Love Sponge, Yamie Bolo and Capleton's Put Down Your Weapon. I got requests to include this riddim under the name Jah Works(by DSelecta@aol.com, respect & bigups to you) and Gone A Hell, but I thought the original was Barrington Levy's Under Me Sensiso I included it as Under Me Sensi. Eventually Pupa Vlado pointed out to me that Under Me Sensi itself is a African Beat version and not an originaland I'm pretty sure that thats correct.

:-) Selecta

Swinging Safari is also another South African song. Just like "Skokiaan- " African Beat" Some movie director just did a documentary on the guy who composed "Swinging Safari"-the film won a Sundance award I thin.He finally won his case last year- not sure if he got paid though

Sorry to dissapoint you all. DON DRUMMOND DID NOT RECORD THIS SONG!Vin Gordon, also called Don D. Junior, is the trombonist here and Lester Sterling the alto sax. they both tour with the skatalites so all you ska heads can go talk to them about it.

Drummond was exceptional, as great a composer and trombonist as they come.so much so, producers in order to sell records are in the habit of crediting to him songs he never played on. examples are Heavenless and Elevator Rock, both by Vin Gordon, and Let George Do It by Rico Rodriquez.

This is quite a travelled song. It is from a South African Zulu song, made popular by the artist who first recorded it 1954 - August Musarurwa, from Zimbabwe. Back home in Zimbabwe, I grew up listening to the version by South African Trumpet Player Hugh Masekhela and Herp Albert 1978 . Louis Armstrong (Satchmo)and Perez Prado (Prez) -Cuban inventor of Mambo, both had huge sucesses with this. As you can see, really all Jazz artists- that's why Don Drummond. In the 50s-60s it was recorded by numerous artists; Ralph Marterie, The Four Lads, Ray Anthony and many others.

Couldn't add any mp3 files now, maybe in a few days if anyone hasn't found any.

My opinion on this riddim is that they used the catchy line from Bert Kaempfort's "africaan beat", and they, (Don Drummond),build the riddim around it! Later it became known as the "under me sensi" riddim after Barrington Levy's classic. Jamaican musicians can be very creatif!!

According to www.originals.be this song is originally titled:
NEW YEAR ROCK - LITTLE KID LEX
original: Little Kid Lex (1958) - Capitol
> Featured on the site of radio station WFMU East Orange, New Jersey (WFMU.org) - 2 hours and some 45 minutes in DJ Marc Grobman's playlist for 23.08.2002.

covers: Bert Kaempfert (1962) as Afrikaan Beat; title track lp and used in documentary Wonderland By Night, focusing on the darker side of the Wirtschaftswunder; since 1966 the theme of the Indian Waterlilies fairytale in theme park De Efteling (NL), Don Drummond (1962) idem; riddim version, Barrington Levy (1984) as Under Me Sensi, Acido (1999) as Di Da Di Dam - Africaan Beat.
Kaempfert has also a tune called "Swinging Safari" which sounds a lot like "Afrikaan Beat"

Comment by: Don Julian Date: 2006-05-02

Comment:
Kampfert's tune is also done by Rolfe Kent on the soundrack to "About Schmidt," starring Jack Nicholson. Sounds just like the Kampfert tune.

About Don Drummond & The skatalites; in the 60's it was common in popular music to cover or use themes from other artists in your reportoire. Heck even the Beatles covered other artists. So, No he wasn't a riddimsnatcher. Just an extremely talented trombonist who "sampled" from all over the musical atmosphere, as well as creating his own originals.
