Drop Leaf
Clearly Jah Cure’s Longing For was the tune of the year, and Drop Leaf was the number one riddim.
Extremely popular riddim, but really a modestly inventive. Once Donovan 'Don Corleone' Bennett finally decide to put an effort into a one drop you’d think, based on his history of wild dancehall riddims, that it would be more original then this. But it has that vibe...
I think Jah Cure’s Longing For is one of the few tunes in later years that will become a classic. It has all the prerequisites, except perhaps the fact that once Jah Cure is free, you will have to start to think about the lyrics as “jah cure” rather then “Jah Cure”. But still, I can see this magnificent tune being Jah Cures signature, a tune that will follow him through his career.
Speaking of Jah Cure, can anyone figure out how he can spend his days in the studio while still being in jail for another few years? Just about every sound in eh world has fresh Jah Cure plates! I was kinda under the impression that jail sentences in JA wasn’t something that was taken lightly, and that JA law system really wasn’t know for turning themselves inside out to meet the wishes of the imprisoned... But you learn something new ever day, don’t ya?
Speaking of roots, check out the Tempo cuts on the Ras I lable. Brutal heavyweight cut of this classic riddm with real strong performances from a mix of big names (Capleton, Jah Mason, Lutan) and nonames.
Well back to Drop Leaf... nuff other great tracks on the riddim but surprisingly enough no one riddim as of yet. Also a strange selection of artists... more to come?
