Ali Baba
In 1970 John Holt had this smash hit on Treasure Isle. His hoarse voice
at the end of the original track is thrilling me every single time I hear
it ...
According to Steve Barrow's liner notes to "If Deejay Was Your Trade", it
was Bunny 'Striker' Lee who built his version in 1975 for Jackie Edwards,
and then used it for the various cuts over the (fictitious) war between
barbers and dreadlocks: 'Baba' mutated to 'barber', and the great,
great Doctor Alimantado was one of the toughest guys in this war.
There is a dub version by the Aggrovators whith a lot of shooting,
and on the dub "Poor Barber" by Dirty Harry (?) you can hardly hear
the music due to the permanent machine gun fire. Earl Sixteen did
'Role A Belly' on this riddim some years ago, and that is the newest
one I know. But I'm sure I have missed a lot of them ...
The cut is from the dub version by the Supersonics from Duke Reid's
'Treasure Isle Dub'.
